The Tesla company gave the public a first look at their latest offering during an event held in their California studio Friday evening. Company founder Elon Musk adopted the role of hype man as he took the stage to give a preview of the company’s new crossover: the Model Y. The event went mostly as expected, with Musk giving the audience a glimpse at the vehicle’s design while providing a few key details.
The vehicle is slated to be released in Fall 2020 with three different model types from which to choose, with a cheaper Standard version coming the following year. Musk promised that the Long Range model would have a “true useful range of 300 miles,” which is just 25 less miles than the same version of the Model 3 sedan.
Musk seemed sure that the vehicle would maintain the company’s standard of safety. The Model Y will be equipped with Tesla’s Autopilot self-driving software, which Musk said should be feature complete by the year’s end. The company also predicts that the vehicle will attain a 5-star crash test rating once tested.
“We expect it will be the safest mid-size SUV in the world,” Musk said at the event.
The Model Y marks Tesla’s first foray into the ultra-competitive crossover category. Features such as a glass panoramic roof, large cargo area and an optional 7-seat configuration should help it to win some customers over. Despite the competition, don’t look to Musk to express any doubts about the car’s future.
“I’m confident that, of any mid-size SUV, it’ll be the one you want.”
