There was little doubt that Ford’s newest Shelby project would be the most powerful pony car the world had yet seen. Yet, that didn’t detract from the excitement surrounding the unveiling of the GT500’s actual power numbers.
The company’s June 19th announcement confirmed what we’ve known for a while now, the GT500 is going to be unbelievably powerful. Utilizing what Ford calls the “world’s most power-dense supercharged production V8 engine,” the car is slated to make 760 hp and 625 Lb.-Ft. of torque right from the factory. For comparison, that is 5 more horses than the latest ZR1 Corvette and a few dozen less than the Challenger Hellcat Redeye.
Whereas the Shelbys of yore were hardly more than engine-swapped Mustang GTs, the new GT500 has supercar DNA running through its veins. While its aluminum block 5.2L V8 engine is virtually the same as the GT350’s, the attached 2.65-liter Eaton supercharger is all its own. Design changes from the front fascia to the rear spoiler ensure cooling and aerodynamics are up to supercar standards. In line with most of its contemporaries, there is no manual transmission option available for the GT500. The car will instead run all its power through a 7-speed dual-clutch Tremec transmission that the company claims shifts “markedly faster than any manual gearbox.”
The absence of a manual gearbox will certainly disappoint some hardcore car enthusiasts, but the performance car industry as a whole has been shifting towards utilizing dual-clutch transmissions for some time now. It surely detracts from the tactile driving experience, but the quicker shifts may be worth it in the long run.
In any case, the Mustang GT500 will be putting down heaps of power. The only question now is: what will it cost?
