Volkswagen showed off the versatility of its 7-passenger SUV this week with a concept vehicle dubbed the Atlas Basecamp.
The Basecamp began its life innocuously enough as an Atlas SEL Premium before its designers transformed it via a host of appearance and performance modifications. The modifications were specifically chosen to highlight the way in which the SUV could “be enhanced for trail seekers.”
The Atlas Basecamp has been equipped with larger tires and a beefier suspension in order to complement the SUV’s standard 4Motion all-wheel drive system. The 17-inch all terrain tires appear larger than they are thanks to thick sidewalls and a set of blacked-out rims from fifteen52. To support the larger tires and increase ground clearance, the Basecamp was also fitted with a lift kit with coil over springs that raise the vehicle an additional 1.5 inches.
If those upgrades weren’t enough to set it apart, a custom body kit, roof rack, plus front and rear LED light bars further establish the Basecamp as a rugged adventure vehicle.
Though just a concept for now, the potential defined by the Basecamp could sway some buyers towards the Atlas in lieu of competing 7-passenger SUVs. Volkswagen noted on their website that the vehicle could be seen in person at the 2019 New York Auto Show and the 2019 SEMA show.
